The tradition of hanging mistletoe during the Christmas holidays dates back to colonial days in the US, when returning whalers would hang a whale’s entrails in doorways to dry. They would stand beneath the entrails so that all could see who was responsible for the hunt, and women would often kiss the triumphant whaler out of respect.
The changeover to mistletoe was largely driven by concerns about odor.
